Be a Rug!

Using recycled cloth to make your rag rug is a great way to help the environment. It’s important, though, to respect your materials and realize that they’re going to need some care and attention if your project is going to grow into a happy, healthy rug. Your “rags” are starting a new life, after all, and they need to be “trained” to work together to create a masterpiece of functional folk art. It’s a little like housebreaking a puppy, only a LOT easier. It can also be a lot of FUN and a great stress-buster as you work on your project!

The thing to keep in mind is that you’ll need to train your rug as you go. Just stop your crocheting once in a while and lie your work flat on the floor. Then step onto the rug and walk all over it, flattening it with your feet. This will train your materials to lie flat and take on their new life as a colorful Rag Rug. We recommend, too, that you actually talk to your rug as you walk on it. Start chanting, “Be a Rug! Be a Rug! Be a Rug” - and really throw yourself into it! Commit yourself, and your rug will respond. You'll be amazed at the difference this will make!

It’s important to repeat this process many times, both while you’re working on the rug and after it’s finished. If you have young children, you can make this a family affair. Have the kids pitch in by dancing around the rug, saying “Be a Rug! Be a Rug!” The effect is almost magical! Your rug will become more than just another addition to your home, but something your family will have had a hand - or should we say FOOT! - in creating.

You’ll find it easy to get started with our Recycled Rag Rug Kit, which includes recycled material, a center start, crochet hook, and instructions! Just remember to add the love, care, and attention – and to take the time to train your “rags” to BE A RUG!
